Accessibility:
Before you start any barrier free renovation project at your home call me first! It is important to know that it is best to get a Letter of Medical Necessity from an Occupational Therapist. Based on their evaluation they can best describe what renovations will be needed to meet mobility, cognitive and barrier free needs.
Kitchen and Bath Design News did an article on accessible design. They indicated that according to research, "as we age we may not need more lighting in certain areas of the home and that more lighting may even be harmful. The same is also true in using borders to mark room entrances as a visual cue. People with Alzheimer’s disease may have a problem with containment and may find borders disturbing or even be afraid to cross them. This is why I utilize the services of an Occupational Therapist, Nurse and other care professionals when writing specifications and designing accessibility needs. In the future builders, architects and home remodelers will utilizes these services as a common function. What technology provides is not just confined to the physically challenged. The consumer could suffer from a cognitive disability. This could involve a memory issue. In this situation, they may need the technology of calling back home to check to see if they left the coffee pot or iron on. Existing technology is available that allows you to call back and “talk to” an appliance. The problem, however, is that there is not enough of a demand so that this type of solution could be costly. Over time, this will change.
Remember we can handle the compete barrier free project from evaluation to renovation.
