Jammed Garbage Disposal:
Tools and Materials: Broom handle (or wood dowel),
1/4" allen wrench (usually comes with the disposal when purchased)
If your disposal is jammed, you will first have to
shut off the power to the unit. Either switch the circuit off to the disposal
at the main electrical panel or unplug the unit from the wall. Now, take
a broom handle or wooden dowel and place it into the garbage disposal.
Try to rotate the slinger (impeller blade) to break it loose. Try to rotate
it in a counter-clockwise direction. If the unit is still jammed, remove
the wooden dowel and take the allen wrench and insert it into the center access hole at the bottom of the unit. Move the wrench back & forth
until the rotating disk breaks loose. Rotate one full revolution in both
directions. Remove the allen wrench and restore power to the unit. At the
bottom of the unit is a reset button. Push this button and while running
cold water, turn the disposal on.
